Cadillac History

Cadillac is one of the most reputed brands of luxury automobiles in the world. Henry Leland was the founder of Cadillac in 1902. Cadillac is the second oldest brand of car manufacturers in America. Today, Cadillac has a century-long heritage in a luxury car assembly.

The name Cadillac, inspired by the founder of Detroit, Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac. Detroit City is the home of the first-ever Cadillac plant. In 1903, the first Cadillac car rolled out of the Detroit plant and in the next few years, the brand slowly became one of the most favored choices for car buyers.

In 1908, Cadillac introduced the concept of standardized machine parts in America. This jump-started an economic revolution, as businesses began producing standardized car parts in mass. For this contribution, they awarded the company the Dewar Trophy–one of the greatest recognitions in the automobile world.

The very next year, General Motors bought Cadillac, and the company became part of a bigger legacy. In the next few decades, Cadillac introduced game-changing automotive technologies, like the breaker-point ignition system, electrical self-starter, V8 engine, synchromesh transmission, V16 engine, automatic transmission with hydraulic clutch, thermostat, the tail fin (for which it received Car of the Year award in 1949), and its biggest contribution, a passenger car with a fully closed cabin.

Cadillac’s contribution to the luxury car world didn’t stop at this. In 1927, the company introduced its LaSalle convertible coupe, one of the most iconic luxury cars in the world today. This vehicle, with its elegant design, rich aluminum plating, and (then) state-of-the-art technology, brought Cadillac global fame.

A few years later in 1950, the first Cadillac Coupé de Ville made a mark at the Le Mans 24 Hours in France, kick-starting its amazing history in active sports car racing.

The following few decades were relatively quieter. But the Cadillac brand won the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, and the Seville Touring Sedan won the Car of the Year in 1992.

The 2000s started with a bang, introducing the magnificent Escalade SUV. Today, you can find many trim levels and hybrids in this luxury SUV range.
